Don't argue with ruffians

This is related to Pankaj Narang murder case. "Vikaspuri murder: Dr Pankaj Narang was dragged out of home, beaten to death with bats."

Terrible! Sad!

Moral - avoid arguments with ruffian type people. Swallow your pride. Bear the insult and let it go. You don't know how things will turn out to be. Sometimes what you think is a small argument becomes a fatal one like this. As a decent person you are no match for ruffians. Or keep a licensed gun. Not practical for many.

A similar incident, of lesser magnitude, comes to mind. A family friend of ours in hometown Dharwad experienced something similar a few years ago. He was going to work on his scooter. Suddenly a large dog came out of a compound and chased his scooter. Somehow he managed to evade the dog and also saved himself from falling from his scooter. He would have been seriously injured if he were to fall from his scooter. It was very scary and dangerous.

He was very upset, naturally, that people who keep crazy dogs can be so irresponsible. He traced his way back, went to the house and asked to see the owner. A large guy came out and inquired what the matter was. Our man told about the incident and told the dog's owner that he had to keep the dog properly restrained and not leave it like that which had become a menace to the people on the road. No heated argument or nothing like that. Genuine concern expressed in a very gentlemanly way. Without a second thought, that dog's owner thoroughly slapped our guy a few times and asked him to get the hell out of his place. Our guy, a very decent family man, was completely taken aback from the harsh treatment meted out to him. Insult and injury together. Totally unexpected.

Then he went to the local police station to lodge a complaint. You won't believe the advice he got when he complained and asked to register a complaint against the dog's owner who had thrashed him. Cops said, 'Sir, why do you want to take 'panga' (issue) with him? He is a noted rowdy (goonda) of that area. If you insist on registering the case, he might harm you or your family members in some other way later. Do you want all that 'laphada' (headache)? Just forget all about it and go home,' This is what cops told him. They were in no mood to bring the the goonda to books. May be he was their friend and may be there was some sort of 'understanding' between them.

Our hapless guy came to our house and cried before my parents whom he considered as mentors. My father even inquired if he should use his contacts in the police higher-ups to help him out. He had been so thoroughly brainwashed and scared by the cops that he did not want to pursue the matter any more. 'Who wants anymore headache Sir? I have two teenage daughters. I don't want any risk for them. I am crushed by the insult more than the injury. But, I will bear it'.

Logical decision? For him probably yes.
